I think I finally understand why people love fall so much.
Having spent most of my life in Florida, autumn was always something I saw in photographs or experienced briefly while traveling. A few years ago, I took a girls' trip to the Berkshires and got a little taste of what everyone was talking about. The changing leaves, the crisp air, the colors that seemed almost too beautiful to be real. But then I went home to Florida, where October looks an awful lot like September.
This year is different.
This is my first real fall, living here in the Charlottesville countryside, watching the season unfold right outside our windows at Grey Oaks Farm.
And I am completely taken with it.
The Beauty of a Virginia Autumn
There is something so interesting about the way the trees change. They're preparing for winter, for a season of quiet and rest, and yet they seem to come alive just before it arrives.
Every morning, the farm looks a little different. The trees along the pond are turning shades of gold and rust, the light is softer, and the mountains in the distance are beginning to show their fall colors. I find myself noticing little things I might have overlooked before.
It feels like the whole landscape is putting on one last beautiful show before winter.
And as a photographer, I can hardly believe I get to work in it.
A Mother and Her Boys at Grey Oaks Farm
One of my first fall family photography sessions here in Charlottesville was with a mother and her two boys.
We spent the evening wandering around Grey Oaks Farm, stopping beneath the trees, spending time near the pond, and letting the boys be boys. There was plenty of laughter, a little silliness, and those wonderful moments when everyone forgot about the camera.
It was exactly the kind of family session I love.
Watching this mother with her sons brought me right back to when my own boys were little. The way they lean into their mama, the way they laugh together, the way they still reach for her without thinking about it.
My boys are getting older now, and I know how quickly those little gestures begin to change. You don't necessarily notice it happening. One day you realize that the little boy who used to fit so perfectly in your arms is suddenly nearly as tall as you are.
I think that's part of why I love photographing mothers with their children so much. I recognize how precious these ordinary moments really are.
Family Photographs That Feel Like You
When I photograph families, I want the beautiful portraits, of course. I love a photograph where everyone is together, the light is lovely, and you can see the Virginia countryside stretching out behind them.
But the photographs I find myself returning to are often the quieter ones.
A boy resting against his mother's shoulder. Brothers laughing together in the grass. A spontaneous hug. A mother looking at her children with an expression that says more than words ever could.
Those are the moments that tell the story of a family.
This session had so many of them.
And with the autumn light filtering through the trees at Grey Oaks Farm, it felt particularly special.
Fall Family Photography in Charlottesville, Virginia
Moving my photography business to Charlottesville has been an exciting new chapter, and getting to experience my first Virginia fall through the families I photograph has made it even sweeter.
Grey Oaks Farm has quickly become one of my favorite places for family photography. Between the pond, the open fields, the beautiful old trees, and the Blue Ridge Mountain views, there is so much room for children to explore and families to simply enjoy being together.
One of the things I've come to love most about living here is watching the farm change with the seasons. The fresh greens and delicate blooms of spring gave way to the lush, vibrant colors of summer. And now, the very same trees and fields are turning the most beautiful shades of gold, amber, and rust. Places I've walked past a hundred times suddenly look completely different.
No two seasons here feel quite the same, and I love knowing that the same spot where I photograph a family in spring can tell an entirely different story in autumn.
For now, I'm soaking up every bit of this first fall. The changing leaves, the cooler evenings, the golden light, and the opportunity to photograph families in the middle of it all.
I have a feeling fall is going to become my favorite season.
